West Chiltington - News

Elephant and Castle.

There are plans proposed for the construction of 6 homes on the Elephant and Castle pub garden. There are some interested buyers who want to re-open the pub for use by the village again. It has been the heart of the community for so long and it now needs your help. Please make any comments you think are worthy once viewing the plans. Once lost, it will never open up again. Here is the link to view the plans and to make a public comment.

Great news! The Roundabout Hotel to re-open.

I have received the following news from the new owners

I am pleased to advise that the new owners of The Roundabout Hotel, The Chapman Group, Relaxinnz will be reopening The Roundabout hotel after some extensive refurbishment, hopefully in April.

There will be a grand opening and I will keep you posted as developments occur.

My wife and I will be running the operation for the group and we are currently looking for staff both permanent and temporary.

We have a new website where you can see who we need and how to apply for a position, and there will be much more on the site to come with details of the hotel and facilities.

We are excited to be able to bring the hotel back to its former glory and hope that we will see all of you at the grand opening. Watch this space for progress reports.

HDC and the economy

Horsham District council are running a survey to assess opinion on their Public Services. Obviously with the large cuts the Government are enforcing they need to have basis on which to work. Please give them your views!

Have fun keeping fit!

We now have Salsa and Zumba classes in the Village Hall - for Salsa you can contact Bruny on 07949 913826 or email Bruny. Check the Village Hall page for details of the Hall programme.

Local Enterprise Partnership - 'Coast to Capital'

Somewhere in the coalition's process of phasing out the various RDAs (including ours, the South Eastern Development Agency - SEEDA), new regional development partnerships are being formed. Out of 62 bids for approval, ours - 'Coast to Capital' - was one of the 24 successful ones. The area it covers is here. As you can see there are 5 regions in it, Croydon, the Gatwick Diamond, Rural West Sussex (yes, that's us!), Coastal West Sussex and Brighton and Hove.

More information, which has a link to a 2mb PDF download if you want to read more, is available here. The LEPs appear to be reasonably well-funded by central government and the EU. Part of the thrust of the LEP will be on broadband provision to businesses - to quote:

Our LEP will work with BT, Open Reach and other telecom infrastructure providers to ensure that by 2020 the minimum speed to all key business locations is 100mbps (in and out) and that to 90% of all businesses in the area the speed is 20mbps (in and out).

Any improvement for business will necessarily assist ordinary residents, so DO get on our bandwagon for improving our broadband by reading the broadband pages and registering your interest - we are in discussion with the LEP and local district and county and we need your 'weight' behind us. We are already a good 'head and shoulders' above other regions in our area.

West Chiltington Woodlands

If you are not aware of this active group, you should be! Our village is fortunate indeed to have so many wooded areas and they all need care and protection. The group offer some extremely interesting events which include 'bat walks' and 'fungi safaris' which take place in Monkmead Woods. For more information have a look at their site West Chiltington Woodlands where you can access their latest newsletter too.

Hallmark Stage III achieved

An excellent achievement. Attaining this level of quality in the scheme for Village Halls places our hall in a very small group that have reached this level. A big 'well done' to all on the committee for their efforts.

Coming soon! March’s presentation from the Mary How Trust Film Society will be 'My Week with Marilyn' (15), on Tuesday 27 March. Simon Curtis’ beguiling film stars Kenneth Branagh as Lawrence Olivier and Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe. Seen through the eyes of a star-struck young Colin Clark (brother of Tory MP Alan) this is the story of his unlikely friendship with Marilyn during the filming of “The Prince and the Showgirl” in 1956. A charming and touching film, and Williams steals the show as the troubled but luminous Marilyn Monroe.

Next Films: To come - War Horse, The Iron Lady and J Edgar.
